Flu activity continues to increase

State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said, "We strongly encourage anyone who has not yet gotten the flu vaccine to get one immediately to combat this significant threat to public health".

Following a slow start to the flu season, the U.S. has seen 3 weeks of influenza-like illness activity levels at above the national baseline of 2.2%, flu activity reported as regional or widespread in 24 states and Guam, and an increase in respiratory specimens testing positive for flu at clinical laboratories across the country.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to get the flu shot as soon as possible ahead of the flu season's peak.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that the best way to prevent the flu is to be vaccinated annually.

During the 2017-2018 flu season, over 300 flu related deaths were reported in Indiana. So far, only four counties in the state have not had a reported case of flu.

The state confirmed Michigan's first flu-related death last week.

"Generally, the highest hospitalization rates are for people over 65 and this year so far, the highest hospitalization rates are for children under 5", Dr. Kerry Fierstein, the CEO of Allied Physicians Group, said. And the number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 363 - a 41 percent increase over the week ending December 15, according to recent data. Last flu season was the county's worst in almost 20 years of collecting data, with 342 residents succumbing to flu complications. To date, there are already 11 pediatric deaths recorded for the 2018-2019 flu season. Seven states and Puerto Rico are experiencing moderate flu activity. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the child's family and hope we can help people understand that flu is a serious illness".
