Apple to build new $1 billion campus in Austin

A handful of cities will host Apple's growth, which includes a new $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas.

In January, Apple said it would invest $30 billion in the USA over the next five years and create 20,000 new jobs, using some of the overseas profits repatriated at a tax rate lowered under a law passed by Congress last year.

In Austin, Apple will be hiring an initial 5,000 employees, saying it has capacity to grow that number to 15,000. Apple also plans new sites in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City, California. Its other offices in Seattle, San Diego, and Los Angeles will host almost 1,000 workers initially. At 6,200 people, Austin already represents the largest population of Apple employees outside Cupertino. The company is aiming to create 20,000 jobs nationwide by 2023. The good news is places like Pittsburgh are starting to make real strides in becoming targets of these investments.

Apple expects the 133-acre Austin campus to generate 5,000 jobs initially and potentially 10,000 more later.

Apple will also invest $10 billion in United States data centers over the next five years, with plans to spend $4.5 billion this year and next.

North Carolina leaders have not said how much the state was offering Apple in incentives, but the legislative changes to incentives removed the limit on what could be offered per job and allowed companies to get credit for future expansions of their workforce.

Contrasting Amazon, which cited finding and recruiting a talented workforce as a reason behind its new location decisions, Apple said talent was not confined to certain geographical locations. The facility will be about a mile down the road from established facilities.

And while Amazon chose Raleigh as one of the 20 finalists cities for HQ2, that company cooled its interest on the region after visiting in March.

The tech company will be hiring across a broad range of positions, including research and design, operations, finance, sales and customer support.

Apple's existing facility in north Austin has more than 6,000 workers, the most outside its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

'Apple has been a vital part of the Austin community for a quarter century, and we are thrilled that they are deepening their investment in our people and the city we love, ' said Austin Mayor Steve Adler in a prepared statement Thursday. The new Vancouver space, adjacent to a cluster of new Amazon offices, is expected to become a new major corporate office that could potentially employ as many as 1,000 people. "I don't know how you say 3,000 Salesforce jobs is not high-profile".
