High school football player arrested over death of pregnant classmate

A 16-year-old has been charged with killing a pregnant classmate and her unborn child, of whom he was the father, authorities say.

Aaron Trejo, 16, is charged with one count of murder and one count of feticide.

An autopsy showed that Rouhselang died from multiple stab wounds and that her scarf had been wrapped so tightly around her neck that it was already strangling her before she died. Her family called police about 4:30 a.m. Sunday after they "got the feeling that something wasn't right", said Lt. Alex Arendt of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.

Now, an entire community is mourning after police say they found the teen's body inside a dumpster in South Bend, Indiana, just a short walk away from where she lived, according to WSBT-22.

During the interrogation, Trejo stated that "neither he nor Breana wanted to have the baby" and that he had no idea where she was, according to the court document.

Her family told local media that in addition to cheerleading, Breana had been a softball coach and a manager of the football team, Fox59 reports. Officers found more blood and soon found Rouhselang's body in a nearby dumpster in back of a restaurant near the house, with a plastic trash bag over her head and upper body. He is due in court on Tuesday. When the girl did not return by the early hours of Sunday morning, her mother reported her missing to South Bend Police Department. He was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 9, and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail, where he remains in custody. When asked what happened that night, Trejo allegedly said, "I took action ..."

The victim's stepmother said Rouhselang was 6 months pregnant at the time of her death.

When Rouhselang's mother woke up around 1 a.m. on Sunday and noticed her daughter had not yet returned home, she went to Trejo's home, where the suspect told her he hadn't seen Rouhselang that night as the two had planned. Trejo indicated that he waited around for a few minutes and then went home after Breana did not reply to a message he sent her, police said. School administrators are working with authorities in the investigation of the death of 17-year-old Breana Rouhselang.

Mishawaka High School released a statement Sunday afternoon on Rouhselang's death, saying it was a awful tragedy.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends who have been affected by this great loss", the statement said.

"I've known her since she was six", she said.

"The juvenile court has no jurisdiction over someone charged with murder if they are 16 years of age or older", St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter told the Indianapolis Star.

Sometimes a fresh start on a good team and better coaching can make the difference for a player lacking desire and motivation. His output became nearly non-existent with the Bills as the team's direction shifted and he showed little desire to play.
