Comey transcript reveals questions about 2016 campaign

Comey was questioned as part of a Republican-led House inquiry into possible Russian interference in the United States election, and email use by Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in 2016.

Comey will appear for the interview Friday after fighting a subpoena in court.

Comey denied a tweet from Mr. Trump earlier this month which said that he and Mueller were "best friends".

Republicans are putting together a report detailing their findings on the FBI's investigations into Clinton's email scandal and the Russian Federation probe.

Comey (shown above left) has been a main person of interest since the beginning, for his involvement in a key investigation and his public comments.

Comey arrived for testimony shortly after 9 a.m. ET.

Incoming House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler said the probe into Federal Bureau of Investigation behavior was a "waste of time" and that he would shut it down. This is a term that he began using shortly after Democrats reclaimed the House of Representatives in November.

"It's a waste of time to start with", Rep.

The GOP congressman Darrell Issa said Comey came with a justice department lawyer who repeatedly instructed the former FBI chief not to answer "a great many questions that are clearly items at the core of our investigation".

Even while the questioning was still underway, GOP lawmakers were telling reporters that "they weren't satisfied and might try to bring him back another day", the AP reported. Comey was accused in the report of making a serious error in judgment by sending the letter to lawmakers that was he reopening the email investigation.

"The entire objective of this investigation is to cast aspersion on the real investigation, which is Mueller", Nadler told reporters outside Comey's testimony.

Citing a poll that has in the past given him more generous numbers than others have, President Donald Trump on Thursday tweeted that he'd have an even higher approval rating were it not for the Russian Federation investigation being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

So far, more than 30 people have been charged or pleaded guilty in Mueller's investigation.

Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz released a review of the email investigation on June 14.

The Republican chairman of the House's judiciary committee, Virginia Rep.

After the court fight was resolved, Goodlatte said a transcript will be released "as soon as possible after the interview, in the name of our combined desire for transparency". But it also found there was no evidence that Comey's or the department's final conclusions were motivated by political bias toward either candidate.

President Donald Trump ultimately fired Comey in May 2017.
