Democrat McCready takes back concession in disputed 9th congressional district race

It is the latest wrinkle in an election mess that left the 9th District as the last undecided House race of 2018.

McCready's move comes after the head of the state Republican Party said he would support a new election in the state's unresolved congressional race if an investigation shows that wrongdoing swayed its outcome.

Since reports of irregularities in the 9th District emerged last month, Republican leaders in the state - including Dallas Woodhouse, the state Republican executive director - initially played down concerns that laws were broken.

"I didn't serve overseas in the Marines to come home to NC and watch a criminal, bankrolled by my opponent, take away people's very right to vote", McCready tweeted on Thursday, announcing his stunning decision. "Today I withdraw my concession and call on Mark Harris to end his silence and tell us exactly what he knew, and when".

In the race for North Carolina's 9th Congressional District, new evidence shows that more than a thousand absentee ballots from mostly Democratic voters may have been destroyed as part of potential election fraud in the state. The state elections board refused to certify the results, citing "claims of numerous irregularities and concerted fraudulent activities related to absentee mail ballots", according to Joshua Malcolm, who was bumped from the board's vice chair to its chairman by Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, on Monday.

He is alleged in voter affidavits to have collected unfinished absentee ballots. The candidate, who lost, paid for Dowless' get-out-the-vote efforts and received 98 percent of the absentee ballot vote in the controversial Bladen County. If true, this would raise serious questions about what Republicans knew and why, if they knew anything, they failed to take action - especially since the party has claimed to be so ruthlessly obsessed with protecting the integrity of elections.

Jamie Bowers, a spokesman for outgoing District 9 incumbent Rep. Robert Pittenger, said he isn't sure if House leaders can chose a victor in the case of an uncertified race.

Republican Mark Harris defeated a three-term incumbent in the primary and leads Democrat Dan Mc Cready by 905 votes in Bladen County N.C. The nation's last unresolved congressional race is in doubt amid voter fraud probes

McCready conceded the race the day after the midterms after not asking for the recount he was entitled to because the margin was so small.

Colbert described the fraud allegations like this: volunteers for the Republican went door to door collecting the absentee ballots (which would already be illegal in North Carolina). Local Republicans point out that absentee ballots mostly favored Democrats, including Burton, in Robeson County, and the problems in Bladen didn't leak into this county.

There is no evidence that the irregularities in absentee ballot returns changed the outcome of the race.

Pelosi said "any member-elect can object to the seating and the swearing-in of another member-elect".

Highlighting the accusations in the rural North Carolina congressional district, Colbert told his viewers that Harris is a Baptist minister.

North Carolina Republicans and Democrats continue to fight over how to investigate the allegations of election fraud.
