Mourners Pay Tribute to President George HW Bush at US Capitol

The New Yorker was a particularly bad offender, with writer Thomas Mallon describing Bush as a character who had an "irreducible niceness" to him, a man who waged a "just" war in Iraq and a president who "presided over a brief but glorious Pax Americana".

George W. Bush announced that Sully is heading to his next assignment: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.

Dignitaries had come forward on Monday, too, to honor the Texan whose service to his country extended three quarters of a century, from World War II through his final years as an advocate for volunteerism and relief for people displaced by natural disaster. He was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996.

Bush died Friday at the age of 94. "It's a good thing that the dog is moving on to another gig where he can be helpful to other people (rather than becoming another Bush family pet)".

Receiving less attention during a week of public mourning, however, were the uncomfortable bits of Bush's legacy.

Bush's service dog Sully visited the casket in the Capitol earlier Tuesday.

The Kansas Republican, with some help from an aide, stood from his wheelchair to salute the late Bush as he lay in state at the Capitol Rotunda. "President Bush worked selflessly throughout his long life to bring about a world of justice and lasting peace".

U.S. Postal Service to shut down on Wednesday for National Day of Mourning

"He taught us public service was noble and necessary", his son and the 43rd president, George W. Bush, told the invited guests at Washington National Cathedral. He died on November 30 at the age of 94. The late President Bush called Trump a "blowhard".

It is a tradition for the stock market to close for funerals of former presidents.

The Bush family has assured Trump that eulogies at Wednesday's funeral will avoid any criticism of him, The Washington Post reported.

Bush was born into privilege and politics (his father a US senator and grandfather a top industrialist). Many banks and other businesses also will shut down, and government buildings are flying flags at half-staff until December 30.

His death also reduces membership in the club of living ex-presidents to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama.

Those close to the service dog say for now Sully appears lonely, loyal to the US leader for whom he had unwavering allegiance.
