George HW Bush begins final journey to Washington before burial in Texas

Bush was eulogized during a Capitol ceremony by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who called him "a humble servant who loved his fellow citizens", and a "principled leader who knew America not only guards our own future, but also safeguards democracy for the world".

Their presidencies separated by a single generation, the nation's 41st and 45th presidents shared little in personality or worldview.

"To be honest, at one point in history, ' he said, "it would not have been exceptional to have a president who obeyed and appreciated the norms of the American system and of the presidency, who was civil, who was kind to people and who rose above petty squabbles".

Many have also heralded Bush's 73-year marriage to his wife, Barbara Bush, who died months before her husband in April 2018.

The entire campus, except for dining services, will be closed for the day. He joined the navy when he turned 18.

Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged the longest presidential marriage in US history.
