Samsung and Verizon to launch 5G phone in 2019

While its predecessor was mass-produced by Samsung previous year, things will change for the Snapdragon 855.

The downside is, we know how Qualcomm rolls. I promise our readers that I will maintain my trademark snarky impartiality as relates to anything said on a keynote stage or by a person who smiles at me in a way I find suspicious in either duration or intensity.

According to Verizon, the carrier's 5G mobility service will go live in early 2019, offering bandwidth far greater than today's 4G LTE networks, and other benefits like improved network reliability. There's a new concept video which imagines what the Galaxy S10 display hole would feel like during use.

The new chip that will accompany the top of the range smartphones throughout 2019 has been leaked a few hours before its presentation.

If you thought Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas' weeklong wedding seemed over-the-top, just wait 'til you see the bride's dress. Priyanka Chopra could not hold her emotions as she teared up while walking down the aisle. "I could not hold it in".

The Galaxy S10 line is expected to do away with the front-facing iris scanner of Samsung's recent flagships as several sources already claimed it will instead be positioning an ultrasonic fingerprint reader as its primary screen-unlock method, though it's still likely to feature some form of facial recognition support. And that's really the only 5G "first" that matters. T-Mobile is now in the process of deploying its own mobile 5G network, and there's every reason to believe Verizon and AT&T are quietly doing so as well at this point.

Yesterday (Dec. 3), Verizon announced its first 5G smartphone in a partnership with Samsung, and the phone is due out in the first half of next year. Unlike the 5G talks during last year's Snapdragon 845 announcement, this year 5G is much closer to becoming a reality. However, it seems like this modem may not be integrated into the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. The A8s has a mostly (more than 95 percent) front face covered with a functional display with only a small hole in one corner which many believe to be space for the selfie camera. All in the name of progress, of course. Information out of South Korea suggests that the company will produce just one million units of this smartphone (first batch presumably).

Interestingly, Verizon and Samsung's announcement comes hours after Bloomberg reported that Apple won't release a 5G smartphone until 2020.

"5G is going to be about more than just a network".
