Iran tests medium-range ballistic missile, Pompeo says

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi also said Iranian missiles were purely defensive and added, "There is no Security Council resolution prohibiting missile program and missile tests by Iran".

That resolution calls on Iran to refrain from testing missiles capable of carrying a nuclear weapon. We will continue to both test and develop missiles", Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said, adding, "This issue is outside the framework of any negotiations and is part of our national security.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday condemned what he called Iran's testing of a medium-range ballistic missile in violation of the 2015 worldwide agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, from which Washington has withdrawn.

Pompeo said the test violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, however, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal signed by several world powers and Iran. As Washington, D.C., moves forward with a bevy of new sanctions on Iran, some European allies have continued to balk the USA administration, seeking avenues to preserve the nuclear pact and ensure economic ties with Tehran remain open.

Hook from DOS confirmed the missile tested by Iran over the weekend is capable of carrying a nuclear payload.

Echoing Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis denounced Iran for test firing the missile. "Iran's continued testing and proliferation of ballistic missiles shows that the Iran deal has not moderated the Iranian regime as some had hoped". The US pulled out of the deal in May this year, accusing Iran of violating the terms of the deal by continuing its missile development and of threatening regional stability.

"The first two years of the Trump administration demonstrated that President Trump is not undermining these institutions, nor is he abandoning American leadership".

The alleged test comes amid heightened U.S. pressure on Iran, as well as repeated attempts by United States officials to persuade its European allies to stop doing business with Tehran in line with renewed USA sanctions on the country, which came into force on 4 November.

The US reimposed sanctions on Iran in November that target its oil exports, banking sector and access to US dollars.

The United States decided in May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on Iran.

Despite U.S. condemnation of its missile program, the Iranian military affirmed that it will keep conducting tests, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported on Monday.

Hook said "progress" was being made on getting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to consider a proposal to target individuals and entities that play key roles in Iran's missile programme.

CNN argued that the United Nations resolution 2231, which endorsed the implementation of the controversial Iran nuclear deal, does not explicitly prohibit Iran from undertaking any activity related to the testing of ballistic missiles to the dismay of opponents of the pact, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Netanyahu made an unexpected trip to Brussels on Monday afternoon to meet with Pompeo.

Pompeo told an audience of diplomats and foreign military officials that the Trump administration will not accept such transgressions and is acting to reform institutions that have formed the basis of the post-World War II global order.

"So if Iran is in violation so is the U.S.".
