1st women's Ballon d'Or victor asked if she 'twerked' during ceremony

However, as the Norway worldwide was leaving the stage, French DJ and co-host Martin Solveig asked her if she could twerk, the three-time women's Champions League victor abruptly saying "no" and walking away.

Hegerberg told The Associated Press she has no plans to reconsider her decision taken to preserve her "authenticity and my values, as a person, as a footballer".

The Lyon and Norway forward replied "no" and the Frenchman's comments saw social media set alight with people criticising the remark. He also characterizes the incident as a "misunderstanding" and attempts to explain his reasoning, noting that he was asked to prepare a song for each victor and that he thought it was ironic to ask someone to twerk to Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon".

Nope, us neither - nearly ruined Hegerberg's night with an inexplicably sexist remark shortly after the forward collected her award.

Unfortunately, Solveig's remarks have taken some of the attention away from the extraordinary achievement of the three-time women's Champions League victor.

Luka Modric saw off competition from France's World Cup stars as the Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder won the Ballon d'Or on Monday to end a 10-year stranglehold on the award by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. She beat 14 other candidates.

Her victory was overshadowed after she was asked to twerk by the award's presenter, DJ Martin Solveig.

Twerking is a sexually provocative dance move popularised by singer Miley Cyrus.

That Solveig did so with Hegerberg immediately struck many as icky.

And one man who was left absolutely disgusted is tennis player Andy Murray. "To everyone who thinks people are overreacting and it was just a joke, it wasn't. It wasn't. I've been involved in sport my whole life and the level of sexism is unreal".

The other is Mr Shlomo Filber, a Netanyahu ally for more than 20 years and former director general of the communications ministry. Other opposition figures, including opposition leader Tzipi Livni, quickly joined in the call for Netanyahu to resign.

After Hegerberg took the stage and raised her trophy triumphantly, Solveig interviewed her briefly. "It was more of a joke of making her dance".

Hegerberg herself didn't let the uproar mar her evening.

She added: "He came to see me after and apologised".

"I wasn't upset", she said.

Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg, 23, won the first ever women's Ballon d'Or prize on Monday, 3 December, at the prestigious ceremony in Paris.

Soccer has always been very bad with how it approaches the women's game. She is already putting that leverage to use.

The incident was a major talking point despite Hegerberg´s achievement in becoming the first victor of the women´s Ballon D´Or, an award which has been handed to male footballers since 1956. They have existed since 1956 but had not previously had a women's football category.

"He (Solveig) came to me afterwards and was really sad that it went that way".

But she also expressed frustration with the uneven pace of progress for women. A few hours later, Solveig's behavior made her words ring true.
