Police track down couple who lost engagement ring in Times Square

It was not how police described it initially; that John had proposed over a grate, and then dropped the ring. "Our officers rescued it & would like to return it to the happy couple", NYPD wrote on Twitter.

The cops returned Saturday morning to try with daylight on their side, and found the ring - only now Drennan and his bride-to-be, who hasn't been publicly named, were nowhere to be found. "We're making arrangements to get them their ring back", the NYPD tweeted.

"We would like to thank everyone who shared this story!" the NYPD News social channel tweeted.

The happy couple chose to grab a bite to eat and see the Christmas Spectacular in Times Square when the ring escaped.

NYPD officers later managed to recover and clean the piece of jewellery, but could not find the couple so put out an appeal on Twitter.

She crouches down next to him, trying to help but they are unsuccessful. Even before the ring made it home, the woman had said yes.

"I am licensed to practice as a Proposal Location Judge and I would rate this one as a two in regards to kneeling over a grate", another user said.

The Associated Press reports the couple asked police for help but left without giving their names or contact details when the diamond-studded sparkler couldn't be retrieved.

"We could not believe it, we really thought it was gone", Ms Anthony said.

They also wanted to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped to help look at the scene.
