French President to Saudi Crown Prince: ‘You Never Listen to Me’

US intelligence officials have reportedly concluded Mohammed bin Salman must have at least known of the plot to kill Khashoggi, who had written some columns for the Washington Post.

President Erdogan remains deeply frustrated at Saudi Arabia's response to the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the country's consulate in Istanbul.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and bin Salman shared a chummy, enthusiastic greeting, beaming widely and clasping hands in something of a cross between a handshake and a high-five.

Although U.S. intelligence assessed that Bin Salman likely ordered Khashoggi's killing, President Donald Trump last week decided against imposing sanctions on an important trade ally and Middle East intermediary, saying he was not convinced the crown prince was involved.

Trump has said it is vital to preserve the decades-old alliance with Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom is the top buyer of United States weapons and a key oil supplier. World leaders who meet with the Crown Prince should raise these serious allegations.

Proposed US congressional legislation on Yemen, even if passed, is unlikely to impact on Saudi Arabia's ability to pursue the war in Yemen due to available Egyptian, Emerati, and Israeli support.

The G20 summit in Buenos Aires will be the first major global event Prince Mohammed has attended since Mr Khashoggi's murder.

But there was no immediate comment from Russia's president Vladimir Putin, who in the past has called the breakup of the Soviet Union under Bush's president a "historical tragedy".

Stability in Saudi Arabia is the cornerstone of prosperity and progress in the Gulf, and China firmly supports Riyadh in its drive for economic diversification and social reform, President Xi Jinping told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Mr Trudeau spoke directly to Mr Putin during the summit to express Canadian concern about the conflict in the Sea of Azov and the seizure of the Ukrainian sailors. The 33-year-old was seen speaking with Trump, although the White House said they only exchanged "pleasantries".

China and Saudi Arabia have close energy ties. He also pushed the issue of imprisoned human rights workers and the "humanitarian catastrophe" from violence in Yemen.

French President Emmanuel Macron was also filmed speaking to the prince on the sidelines of the summit. Putin is under fire, at least most recently, for the Russian seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors.
