Oprah Winfrey's mother, Vernita Lee, dies at 83

Vernita Lee, the talk show host's mother, passed away on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 83, announced the family.

However due to long separation, Oprah had a rocky relationship with her mother which eventually got better.

The family issued a statement to United States celebrity magazine People which said that Vernita Lee passed away on Thanksgiving, Thursday November 22, at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Vernita is survived by Oprah, her other daughter Patricia, as well as numerous grand children and great grand children.

Memorial donations in Lee's name can be made to Feeding America.

After meeting Vernon Winfrey, Vernita welcomed her first child in rural MS at the age of 18. When Oprah turned 6, she moved to Milwaukee to live with her mom. who was a virtual stranger.

"I suddenly land in a place that's completely foraging to me", she said in an interview with Huffington Post in 2015.

"When you walk into a room, you never walk alone", Winfrey said during a recent speech. "To my mother, I say, 'You can let this shame go'". She then moved to Milwaukee to live with her mother.

"I remember the first night entering into the house and being told that I wouldn't be able to sleep with my mother, and I wouldn't be able to sleep inside the house".

"I remember praying on my knees the very first night I had been removed from my grandmother", she added. The spokeswoman said private funeral services have already been held.

She is survived by her daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her brother Jeffrey died of AIDS in 1989, and Patricia, who died in 2003.

Hitting back, John Legend gave the singer his backing, tweeting: "Fun Fact". Shortly afterward, Rita tweeted a similar statement.
