Cavaliers parting with potential trade target J.R. Smith

And the 33-year-old's trade request still stands.

Smith played a key role in their championship, scoring eight points in the third quarter of Game 7 to get the Cavaliers back in the game.

The Cavaliers fired coach Tyronn Lue last month following a 0-6 start, and the team has been riddled with injuries, the most prominent to All-Star forward Kevin Love, who remains out indefinitely following foot surgery. But the situation was inflamed Monday when Smith gave an interview to the Athletic in which he essentially accused the Cavs of tanking.

The Cavaliers have the worst record in the league entering Tuesday at 2-13. "It's not a secret", James told The Athletic.

The J.R. Smith era is over in Cleveland.

NRL Player Jarryd Hayne Charged With Aggravated Sexual Assault
Hayne's future in the NRL was already in limbo with the off-contract star yet to be offered a new deal by the Parramatta Eels . He left the Eels to play American football in 2015 with the San Francisco 49ers but returned to Australia the following year.

"Not if the goal isn't to compete, to win", he added.

The Cavs wished Smith and his family well and thanked him for his contributions.

"I think I'm done commenting on anything in Cleveland or anything that would be disrespectful", Irving said, per The Boston Globe's Gary Washburn.

Smith has said he does not want his time in Cleveland to end with a buyout, but that may end up being the best possible solution for both sides. He will no longer play or attend the Cavs' games, which means he won't be there for LeBron James' return with the Lakers on Wednesday. "I don't think that's fair to the trainers or the equipment guys", Smith said.

The veteran's contract can be traded for his full 15.6 million dollar value and then waived for just under 4 million in guaranteed money next summer.
