US Expresses Discontent over Report on N. Korean Missile Bases

The Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS, released a report on Monday. "While missiles could be launched from within them in an emergency, Korean People's Army operational procedures call for missile launchers to disperse from the bases to pre-surveyed or semi-prepared launch sites for operations". What happens when he is done "perfecting" the missiles he needs to deliver the nuclear weapons he is promising to dismantle? This report by Beyond Parallel just days after North Korea called off a new round of negotiations with Pompeo that had been scheduled for Thursday in NY.

Construction began on the Sakkanmol Missile Operating Base between 1991 and 1993 and it is thought to have been completed in 2001, and added to since 2011 when Mr Kim came to power.

Last week, North Korea abruptly called off a new round of negotiations with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which the two countries were to discuss denuclearization efforts and prepare for a possible second summit between Trump and Kim.

"These latest revelations are unlikely to cause the Trump administration to change its policy toward North Korea but they do raise some important questions", said Paul Stares, a senior fellow for conflict prevention and director of the Centre for Preventive Action at the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations.

"Note the description of nuclear weapons as the only firm security assurance", Pollack said.

"I don't comment on matters that may or not pertain to intelligence", Bolton told reporters Tuesday on the sidelines of regional summits in Singapore.

I stopped feeling guilty. 'I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there's something wrong with them. At a time where our nation is so polarized, I think Michelle Obama's memoir, and it's timing, can serve as a teachable moment.

"And of course, no one seriously believes that North Korea's underlying capability has been neutralised". It's exactly what Kim said he would do. At what point will they conclude that North Korea is not really making progress toward the stated goal of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula?

Kim Eui-kyeom, spokesman for South Korea's dovish president, Moon Jae-in, disputed that North Korea was being deceptive as Pyongyang had never promised to get rid of short-range missiles.

Trump's statement comes about a week after he reassured critics that denuclearization talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were continuing despite recent hurdles.

The Beyond Parallel programme is led by Victor Cha, who was a candidate to become Washington's ambassador to South Korea, a position which has yet to be filled by Mr Trump. State media warned again this month that Pyongyang might be forced to resume nuclear development if sanctions are not eased. The U.S. said it would vet Russia's list, but administration officials have previously said Moscow is already violating the restrictions.

South Korea has attempted to play down the significance of the undeclared missile sites. "Some of us have been watching them do this for years". For decades, the bases have been camouflaged to prevent destruction from preemptive strikes and during military operations. Located 135 kilometers north of the South Korean capital of Seoul, it can reach the city in a short period of time, it said.

The New York Times said Monday in its report on the CSIS findings that North Korea was engaged in a "great deception" of the president and the rest of the world.
