Another option conservatives are increasingly warming to would be for Trump to let acting A.G. Whitaker take over the job permanently.

Whitaker will be the first witness summoned by the House judiciary committee when Democrats take charge in January, incoming chairman Jerry Nadler said, calling Whitaker "a complete political lackey" and "a real threat to the integrity of that investigation".

As for the Mueller investigation itself, things look ominous. "And I think it's important for the president to have this information out there fully, transparently, and accurately".

McConnell also reiterated his longstanding support for Mueller's investigation, despite Trump's call this week for a speedy end to a probe the president has repeatedly called a "witch hunt" - including on Twitter as recently as Wednesday. It's the closest to an unvarnished opinion on the Mueller Investigation from Whitaker that we're likely to get. There's always been speculation that the special counsel was holding off on making any big moves until after the midterm elections, because of DOJ guidelines barring investigators from taking any overt actions that could be seen as influencing the outcome of an election.

Trump has replaced Sessions with Matt Whitaker, who was serving as the president's chief of staff. Whitaker has argued that cutting Mueller's budget would be a way to end the probe, that investigating President Trump's finances would be a "red line" and that he believes there was "no collusion" between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Mr. Nadler said impeaching Mr. Trump himself is a question that would potentially come up down the road depending on the finding's of Mr. Mueller's investigation and other probes.

McConnell said he expects Trump to nominate a new permanent attorney general "pretty quickly".

In the meantime, congressional Democrats could challenge Whitaker's appointment under the Vacancies Reform Act, given that Sessions did not die or become incapacitated but was asked to step aside by the President.

Democrats also will seek to pass legislation blocking interference with Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, Schumer said on CNN.

"Comments that Matt Whitaker made as a private citizen on cable TV does not disqualify him from being fair and impartial by overseeing this investigation".

Trump added that Whitaker was confirmed for a previous job - as the USA attorney in Iowa.

"I mean, you talk about somebody that's a loser", he said of Ryan. When asked by CNN's Abby Phillip whether his decision to appoint Whitaker was based on his desire to rein in Mueller, Trump angrily attacked her. He sent a department-wide note after his appointment in which he said, "As we move forward, I am committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans".

Of the scrutiny Whitaker is facing, Trump said, "It's a shame that no matter who I put in they go after".

"I'm not doing anything", he said.

"I think everybody looking at a permanent position in any department has done many shows".
