Gareth Southgate surprised by criticism over Wayne Rooney’s England recall

The former-England captain will win his 120th cap in this game, and it is being billed as an opportunity for England fans to give thanks to the country's record goalscorer for his contributions on the worldwide stage.

Rooney has not played for his country for nearly two years and Press Association Sport understands he will make a late substitute appearance in a game which will be known officially as the Wayne Rooney Foundation International.

However, The FA have confirmed that fans will be able to make their own donations to the foundation on match day, though further details are not immediately available.

All in all, a roaring success.

"He's been involved with either scoring or assists, with a high number of goals this season, so it's a good opportunity for us to have a look at him and see how he fits into what we do, and for him to get a feel of working with the senior team".

"It's a great experience for the younger players in our team".

"I don't think [he thought he was going to start the game] but I've not spoken with him. I think all the players respect Wayne's contribution and that he deserves the best possible send-off". This is a chance for not only a great player, but an iconic player and top goalscorer.

Regrexit? British Voters would Now Back Staying in the EU
This could give mainland Britain some scope to set trade rules while keeping the province of Northern Ireland aligned with the EU. Meanwhile, a Survation poll of 20,000 people for Channel 4 estimated Remain would win another in/out referendum by 54%-46%.

"There have been ongoing discussions since Wayne retired about paying tribute to him and his England career", Southgate said.

"I understand that has caused a lot of debate and conjecture but for me I think it is a small way of appreciating what he has done for his country". We're talking about the record England cap-holder for an outfield player, the national side's record goal scorer and someone who has been a fantastic servant for club and country throughout his career.

During today's squad announcement, Gareth Southgate said that England should show more appreciation for their past stars.

World Cup runners-up Croatia are in last place in League A Group 4, having played a game less than group leaders Spain and England.

"In football, and in sport in general, people are not recognised or recognised too late".

"Part of being a footballer is showing the resilience that would be commonplace among the squad, coming back form setbacks whether that's through rejection or injury", said Southgate.
