California bar patron saves dozens of people during deadly shooting

The unnamed gunman opened fire at the Borderline Bar and Grill around midnight on Wednesday, Nov. 7, injuring at least 11 people.

Law enforcement officials identified the gunman as Ian David Long of Newbury Park, a 28-year-old ex-Marine who used a.45-caliber Glock handgun.

Helus succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, police said.

There were hundreds of people packed inside Borderline Bar and Grill when a gunman burst inside throwing smoke grenades and firing dozens of rounds, witnesses and authorities said.

Dean says around 10 other people were shot and wounded.

The police officer was injured when he arrived at the scene with colleagues and "attempted to neutralize the threat", Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian said.

Its website listed Wednesday's event as college country night between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.

The shooting at the Las Vegas country music festival on October 1, 2017 left 58 people dead and more than 500 injured.

A survivor of the mass shooting at a California bar that killed 13 spoke out in an emotional interview on Fox & Friends Thursday morning.

Hours before the shooting, he shared a flier advertising the college country night on his Instagram page, writing: "See y'all tonight!"

Shootings of any kind are very rare in Thousand Oaks, a city of about 130,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Los Angeles, just across the county line.

By the time they entered the bar again the gunfire had stopped, and they found 12 people dead inside, including Helus and the gunman.

"I heard a gunshot, I turned around and I saw him shoot a couple more times", California Lutheran University student Teylor Whittler told KABC.

Helus was one of the first on the scene and was struck multiple times when he went through the front door, the sheriff's office said.

The gunman was also killed, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told a news conference early on Thursday, though it was not immediately clear by whom.

Dean said that investigators were seeking a search warrant to look through Long's house, where he lived with his mother.

Sgt. Ron Helus, who'd worked in law enforcement for 29 years, was among the victims at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks after he "went in to save lives". A handgun was recovered at the scene, which Dean says has not been examined in detail yet.

He first shot a security guard standing outside, then went in and opened fire on staff members and patrons, the sheriff said.

"I can't tell you much about the shooter at this point".

"Within a split second, everybody yelled "get down", she said.

"As soon as he walked in he had ideal form", said Whittler, who added she grew up in a military family.
