Woman Who Lived in Kenyan Refugee Camp Wins USA Elections

In a historic result on couple of seats in the US midterm polls, Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American Ilhan Omar have become the first Muslim women elected to US Congress.

She was joined shortly after on Tuesday night by Omar, who ran for the Democrats in Minnesota's fifth district.

A fighter who once heckled US President Donald Trump during a 2016 campaign stop in Detroit, she says she didn't run to make history as Muslim. "And that if you just believe in the possibility of someone like me", Talib added.

Born in Detroit to Palestinian-American parents, Tlaib served in Michigan's state legislature from 2008 to 2014.

Voters in Minnesota and MI this morning elected the first two Muslim women to serve in the US Congress, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war and a Detroit-born Palestinian-American.

Jones won the Democratic primary special election to finish the rest of Conyers' term, but lost the race for the 13th District full two-year term by about 900 votes.

In recent interviews Tlaib has voiced support for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, slashing USA military aid to Israel and efforts to boycott the Jewish state.

Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib was another Muslim woman elected to the US Congress.

Back in August, Tlaib told ELLE.com about a time during her campaign when a young Muslim woman came up to her, saying she had to win to prove Muslims belong. New Mexico's Deb Haaland and Kansas attorney Sharice Davids were elected the first two Native American women to serve in Congress.

Omar, who engages in anti-Semitic rhetoric, has slandered Israel as an "apartheid regime" and called on "Allah" to "awaken the people" to see the "evil doings of Israel".

According to the former refugee, President Trump's politics of fear motivated her to get in the race, Aljazeera reported on Wednesday, November 7.
