Democrats score governor wins in Trump states, Florida down to wire

While DeSantis' lead continued to hold as late results rolled in from across the state Tuesday evening, Gillum supporters at an election-watch party on the campus of Florida A&M University, where the Tallahassee mayor launched his political career as student body president, refused to concede to the Republican.

Andrew Gillum was poised to become the first black governor in Florida's history.

Florida's more than 13 million registered voters are choosing a new governor and voting on a pivotal U.S. Senate contest.

Last week, both former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump visited Florida to stump for candidates in their respective parties.

But in Wisconsin, Democrat Tony Evers pulled off a narrow win in unseating Republican incumbent Scott Walker, according to data provider DDHQ.

DeSantis' apparent victory marked a bright spot on a mixed night for Republicans, who lost control of the House while retaining control of the Senate.

As governor, DeSantis will essentially be Trump lite. In a Fox News interview the morning after he won the GOP nomination, DeSantis said Gillum's proposals would harm the state's economy and he urged Florida voters not to "monkey this up" by electing Gillum.

Recent polls show a slight edge for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum (D) over Republican candidate Ron DeSantis (R) in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections.

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary.

"Florida is always going to be competitive because you've got the organic growth of a younger population that's more diverse and more liberal but is also more apathetic politically, and you have older, more conservative, white people coming in who are politically mobilized from their past life and have moved to Florida because they want lower taxes".

DeSantis' victory keeps the crucial swing state of Florida in Republican hands for the 2020 presidential election.

"Other than serving in the military, becoming the 46th governor of the great state of Florida is the greatest professional honor of my life", DeSantis said.

Republicans controlled 33 governors' mansions and two-thirds of state legislative chambers going into Tuesday.

Under Georgia law, if neither Abrams nor Kemp wins a majority of the vote on Tuesday, their battle continues to a December runoff. In the largest counties, that could affect the differences by as many as 2,000 total votes.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis was set to become the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a USA state, after NBC News projected him to win against Republican Walker Stapleton.
