US Police Detain Pittsburgh Sinagogue Attacker, Confirm Casualties

Law enforcement on the scene.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News that the suspect is a 48-year-old man named Robert Bowers, and local CBS affiliate KDKA reported that he shouted "all Jews must die" while opening fire.

It was the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, according to the leader of the Anti-Defamation League.

Police surrounded the Tree of Life synagogue after reports of an active shooter at the building in the city's Squirrel Hill neighbourhood, local TV news images showed.

It was not immediately known how many people had been shot, whether there were any fatalities or what the shooter's motive was.

President Donald Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland that the shooting was a "terrible, bad thing".

The violence needs to stop.

"Events in Pittsburgh are far more devastating than originally thought", Trump said in a tweet earlier.

He also said such shooters should receive the death penalty and "suffer the ultimate price".

US Economy Grew At 3.5% Rate in Third Quarter
Friday's GDP report provides more support for this thesis, with government spending rising more than 3 percent in the quarter. Wall Street closed sharply lower but markets were less moved by the GDP data than by disappointing earnings.

The synagogue building in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood where the shooting took place was built on donated land in 1946, after much of the Jewish community.

Minister Naftali Bennett, Israel's Cabinet minister for diaspora affairs, made the comments following a Saturday morning shooting that police say has left several people dead.

In a short briefing, police said the suspect is in custody and confirmed multiple casualties inside the synagogue.

The Tree of Life synagogue was founded more than 150 years ago.

He said security was a "major concern" during his stint as president, and active shooting situations and active shooter trainings were conducted, "if something horrific like this happened".

The Federal Bureau of Investigation took the lead in the investigation, "as this falls under a hate crime", Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich told reporters near the synagogue.

Chattanooga Mayor Berke also tweeted. The assailant is believed to have shot at police as they arrived.

President Donald Trump on Saturday stated that the mass shooting at a Pennsylvania synagogue had "little to do" with gun control laws, suggesting the "results would have been far better" if there had been "protection inside".

The Tree of Life Synagogue is located at the corner of Wilkins and Shady Avenue. More than 80 percent of Squirrel Hill residents said they had some concern or were very concerned about the rise of anti-Semitism, according to a Brandeis University study of the Greater Pittsburgh Jewish community cited by NBC news.
