Kiki Bertens reaches semi-final in WTA tennis championship

Kiki Bertens reaches semi-final in WTA tennis championship

After the match she said: "Obviously playing Angie is always tough for me".

The twists continued as Svitolina hit back immediately and stormed home as a wayward backhand from Stephens sparked jubilation from the number six seed.

Stephens, the 2017 U.S. Open champion, let out a huge yell on breaking her Czech opponent's serve in the third game of the second set after trailing 6-0, 2-0.

But she did not relinquish her lead from then on, out-rallying Stephens to win the set and force a decider.

"I think I have nothing to prove anymore to anyone and it's definitely a good statement for myself", Svitolina said. It's like I'm trying so hard. That was then. On Thursday, Svitolina clinched her semifinal berth with a win against Wozniacki.

Kerber plays the unbeaten Stephens in the last round-robin match from Red Group, with the victor joining Bertens in the semi-finals.

"There is this level of pain that I can play with, so I definitely was going to play", she said.

Svitolina fell onto her back on the court in celebration, and then shared a hug with Stephens.

Her defensive prowess wore down Bertens, who blasted 41 winners but made 63 unforced errors. I wasn't making her play enough balls.

Naomi Osaka's incredible breakthrough season ends in tears
Tearful Osaka Retires From WTA Finals • Channels Television

Svitolina is chasing her fourth title this season, having already won at Brisbane, Dubai and Rome.

The 21-year-old made her Grand Slam breakthrough in NY last month and followed up with a run to the Pan Pacific Open final in Tokyo and the China Open semi-finals, but a leg injury in Singapore ruined any chance she had of adding to that success.

It was Svitolina's turn to make the initial breakthrough in the second set when she capitalised on untidy play from Stephens to edge a break ahead.

It was a bitterly disappointing end for Osaka, who came into the season-finale as the form player but lost three-set matches to Sloane Stephens and Angelique Kerber.

The best result was the semi-finals Andrei Medvedev in 1993.

Sport360 caught up with Bajin in Singapore on Thursday, to discuss Osaka's success this season, how she's swatting away any pressure, and how they plan to keep her star rising next year.

Elina Svitolina reached the biggest final of her career as she overcame Kiki Bertens in three sets to secure a place in the final of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals.
