Houston Texans are getting better with Demaryius Thomas trade

The Broncos have traded wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and a seventh round draft pick to the Houston Texans for a fourth round draft pick and a seventh round pick, the team announced on Tuesday. It's a relatively low-priced deal for a first-place Houston team that's dealing with injuries at receiver. Thomas, who in Denver was averaging 50.3 receiving yards per game with three scores on the season, had been given a rating of 2.0.

This week, the Broncos host the Texans, meaning Thomas will likely play against his former team at Mile High Stadium.

Thomas' departure from the Broncos opens the door for more playing time for second-round pick Courtland Sutton.

Gaining a player like Thomas not only makes the Texans a contender to stay in first place in the AFC South for the rest of this season, but puts the rest of the AFC on notice that they are serious about making a run to the playoffs following an 0-3 start this season.

Thomas was the longest-tenured Broncos player after being drafted by the team in 2010.

For Houston, this trade is directly tied to the torn ACL speedy receiver Will Fuller suffered last week against the Dolphins.

Thomas, 30, has the second-most receiving yards (9,055) and touchdown catches (60) in Broncos history, trailing Rod Smith in both categories. The speed that made Thomas' NFL career has diminished, but that doesn't mean he can't be effective as a target for Deshaun Watson. Houston in that case would save $14 million. According to ESPN, the teams will also swap seventh-round picks.

With a tough game at the Denver Broncos coming up this Sunday they have been dealt some good news.
