CIA Director Gina Haspel to brief Trump on Khashoggi killing

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist known for his critical views of the current Saudi regime, disappeared on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Turkey claims that Khashoggi, who wrote for The Washington Post, was killed inside a Saudi diplomatic mission in Turkey.

Shortly before Prince Mohammed took the stage at the Future Investment Initiative, he spoke to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the killing of Khashoggi.

US President Donald Trump, who first tried to downplay the importance of the ghastly incident and protect bin Salman, on Tuesday blasted Saudi Arabia's efforts to hide the killing of Khashoggi as the "worst cover-up ever".

Bin Salman has chaired the first meeting of a committee set up for that goal, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported Thursday.

Salah Khashoggi, who holds dual U.S. -Saudi citizenship and had thus far been under a travel ban, departed Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

A team totaling 15 Saudis, who flew into Istanbul on October 1 and 2, met on the morning of October 2 before Khashoggi's arrival. Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate by Saudi agents and his body cut up.

On October 2, he walked into the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul and he never left.

The president's briefing comes as the pressure increases on Saudi Arabia to reveal what happened after their initial denials were proven false and their later explanations have shifted.

Mr Erdogan focused in again on Wednesday on Mr Khashoggi's death. Turkish police took a water sample from a well at Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, Hurriyet newspaper reported. There were mixed reports about whether Secretary of State Mike Pompeo listened to the recording when he met with Saudi and Turkish officials last week, but the State Department denied the reports.

Through a steady stream of leaks to Turkish and foreign media, Turkish officials have mounted a compelling case that the Saudi agents planned to kill Khashoggi, dismember him and dispose of his remains.

Among those sacked in the royal orders were two officials in the General Intelligence unit and Saud Al Qahtani, who served as an adviser at the Royal Court and was identified by Turkish intelligence as an architect in the murder of Khashoggi.
