Facebook hires Nick Clegg for top PR job

Clegg will be operating under enormous pressure in his new role, as Facebook attempts to tackle the problem of fake news on its platform before U.S. mid-term political elections in November.

According to the newspaper, the 51-year-old former Liberal Democrat party leader will move to Silicon Valley in January next year to take over the role from Elliot Schrage.

In his new role at Facebook, Mr Clegg will report to chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.

He will move to California with his family in the new year.

Clegg has most recently been in the public eye as a high-profile campaigner for a second European Union referendum.

Cambridge university grad Clegg will join Facebook at a time when it is under increasing pressure from regulators and governments around the world over everything from taxes to data protection.

"But the key decisions will soon pass to Parliament, of which I am no longer a Member, and once I had chose to take up this unique new challenge at Facebook, I felt it was best to get going sooner rather than later".

"While I have good friends who work at the company, I actually find the messianic Californian new-worldy-touchy-feely culture of Facebook a little grating".

The British firm, which worked on US President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, was found to have harvested the data of 87 million Facebook users.

The BBC has contacted Mr Clegg's office for a statement.
