Tip leads to hidden infant remains at Detroit funeral home

Detroit police said Friday night that investigators received an anonymous letter Friday afternoon that lead them to the gruesome discovery.

Eight were stored in a cardboard box and three were found in separate garbage bags that were stuffed into one casket, reports The Detroit News.

Authorities found the remains of 11 infants and stillborn children hidden in the ceiling of a former funeral home in Detroit, Michigan, police said Friday.

"It's just the callousness of the perpetrators - the owner, the employees of the funeral home".

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) said they were following up on a complaint sent to them telling them where to find the bodies. The bodies had been reportedly decomposing for months. Authorities do not know how long the remains had been stored there, he said.

"They're very small remains,"Bowser said".

Jameca LaJoyce Boone, who had managed the funeral home the year before it closed, told The Detroit News she was shocked there were bodies hidden in the ceiling.

The home's owner, Raymond Cantrell, told Fox 2 Detroit in an April interview that he had taken over the funeral home in 2017 and was doing "a favour to accommodate" customers who could not pay.

Police were called around 5:30 p.m. Friday.

"Some of the bodies had a tag on referring back to 2009, some had receipts on them as if the person or family didn't finish paying", Demps said. "I really don't know how that could even have happened".

According to the Detroit Free Press, state investigators acted on a tip received in an anonymous letter which detailed precisely where the bodies were located and how to retrieve them from their storage area inside a false ceiling constructed for the objective of secreting away the infants' remains.

"We do have names for some of the remains and we're going to try to contact the families".

Some of the deceased have been identified, and an investigation is underway, the detective added.
