Portugal declares red alert as Hurricane Leslie nears

The Category 1 storm was 315 kilometers (195 miles) southwest of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Though weakened into a tropical storm, it continued to bring heavy rain and blustery winds to the Southeast as it pushed inland, soaking areas still recovering from last month's Hurricane Florence.

Michael, the third most powerful hurricane ever to hit the U.S. mainland, weakened overnight to a tropical storm but marched northeast yesterday, toppling trees with 80kmh winds and bringing "life threatening" flash flooding to Georgia and Virginia, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) reported. No watches or warnings are in effect.

A tropical storm warning was discontinued for the Madeira archipelago.

Leslie is still expected to generate swells that will affect the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Island throughout the weekend, in addition to the Atlantic coasts of Spain, Portugal and Morocco, forecasters said.

Experts warned of "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions".

Trump visited Saudi Arabia on his first worldwide trip as president and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales. It's a very bad situation. "We can not let this happen, to reporters, to anybody". "We can't let this happen".

The deadly hurricane's assault left nothing more than empty foundations and heaps of rubble when it smashed into Florida's northwest coast near the small town of Mexico Beach on Wednesday with screeching 155 mile per hour winds and 14-foot storm surges.

Hurricane Leslie was moving quickly toward the Iberian Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center said Saturday.

Baldwin also flew over a marina warehouse full of boats that was completely destroyed by the force of the storm's wind; she called it "unreal" to look at.

Global weather forecasting site AccuWeather has dubbed Leslie a "zombie hurricane" as it first formed on September 23 "and has been meandering the waters of the Atlantic Ocean for weeks". It's moving east-northeast at 33 miles per hour, the NHC said.
