‘Mental health should be as important as physical health’

Health Minister Jackie Doyle-Price will lead the national effort and try to end the stigma which stops people from seeking help, the Prime Minister said. Anybody can visit a psychiatrist and psychologist; we should break the stereotype that only people with the mental disorder can visit one.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa says the prevention of mental health illnesses begins with being aware and understanding the early warning signs and symptoms of the illness.

After citing some grassroots programs in nations like Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom that are helping to erase some of the mental health stigma, the duo add that the World Health Organization has been working on a "global action plan" for the past five years.

"For over a decade, we have had doctors who are consultants in sport and exercise medicine looking after our elite athletes", he added.

'Our young people today face constant stressors and challenges - happening in their own lives and in the world around them. "And we can give the mental wellbeing of our children the priority it so profoundly deserves".

"The stigma of mental illness is probably as big a problem as mental illness itself", said Patrick Corrigan, a professor of psychology at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
