Nikki Haley resigns as USA ambassador to the United Nations

Nikki Haley has announced that she is to step down as USA ambassador to the United Nations at the end of the year, and the speculation about her replacement has begun.

"Countries may not like what we do but they respect what we do", she said, echoing the president's often-stated aim to make the United States a more muscular presence on the global stage.

"Dina is certainly a person I would consider", Trump told reporters at the White House on the way to board the presidential helicopter as he embarked on a trip to Iowa.

That fact that Haley pointedly praised Kushner, calling him a "hidden genius that no one understands", and called Ivanka a "great friend", heightened the speculation.

Haley, a former governor of SC, had been an early and frequent critic of Trump, so when he named her the envoy to the world body weeks after his election in November 2016, the appointment was seen as an olive branch.

Haley's replacement will require confirmation by the Senate, with over two-thirds of the seats in that legislative body being contested in next month's midterm elections.

A convert to Christianity in her 20s after being raised a Sikh, Haley is popular with religious conservatives in the South.

Haley is a former SC governor who is speculated to have aspirations for higher office.

Thank you for signing up.

More recently, there was an awkward moment at the United Nations, when Trump's boasting of American economic strength under his leadership drew laughter at a General Assembly session.

They had very few three-pointers to speak of; in other words, they were the opposite of what the NBA is supposed to be today. In fact, not only do they have deficiencies, but they do not even have the tools or resources to resolve those deficiencies.

Haley said it is an honor of lifetime to serve the country she loves so much.

Haley also secured three successively tougher Security Council sanction resolutions against North Korea - which the administration has credited with bringing Kim Jong Un to the negotiating table - and an arms embargo against South Sudan.

She recently said she supported Mr Trump's administration but admitted they still had their differences.

Haley in her meeting with Trump said she won't run against Trump and will instead campaign for him. "I just don't know who I'm fighting that day", Haley told Reuters earlier this year.

Haley is merely the latest in a long line of Cabinet officials or senior administration officials to exit.

'Hopefully you'll be coming back at some point, ' Trump said, perhaps in a different capacity.

"We're all happy for you, in one way", Trump said. She was re-elected on November 4, 2014.

After a frosty relationship with Rex Tillerson, Trump's first secretary of state, she and Tillerson's successor, Mike Pompeo, often exchanged mutual praise.

I can't say enough good things about Jared and Ivanka.

Ms Haley, 46, was made United Nations ambassador in January 2017, shortly after Mr Trump was inaugurated. "I know the pain that hate can cause, and we need to isolate haters, and we need to make sure that they know there is no place for them".
