India signs S-400 deal with Russian Federation sidestepping United States opposition

India wants the long-range missile systems to tighten its air defence mechanism, particularly along the almost 4,000-km-long Sino-India border.

India quietly seals missile deal with Russian Federation despite US warning Vladimir Soldatkin, Sanjeev Miglani 3 MIN READ NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India agreed a deal with Russian Federation to buy S-400 surface to air missile systems on Friday, the two sides said, as New Delhi disregarded USA warnings that such a purchase could trigger sanctions under US law.

Official sources said the two countries also signed the $5 billion S-400 air defence system deal after talks between the two leaders in Hyderabad House. Turkey also is planning to buy the S-400, despite US opposition to the purchase by a fellow North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member.

PIBPrime Minister Narendra Modi today said India is emerging as a shining star among world economies and the government is working on a number of reforms to boost this.

But Russia remains India's main arms supplier, and a string of new deals with the Asian giant would be a major win for Moscow - and a big snub to the US.

Almost 70 percent of India's present-day defence equipment was procured from Russian Federation, according to India's defence ministry. "We can not prejudge any sanctions decisions", the US Embassy spokesperson added. The Triumph missile deal comes amid U.S. threat of sanctioning countries under CAATSA for their defence purchases with Russian Federation.

He and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn't mention the deal during a news conference, but a joint statement issued on their behalf confirmed it had been done.

"India gives top priority to its relations with Russian Federation".

India has signed more than $15 billion in United States defence contracts since 2008, including for C-130J and C-17 transport aircraft, P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, Harpoon missiles and Ap ache and Chinook helicopters.

The US passed the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act earlier this year, and said countries trading with Russia's defence and intelligence sectors would face automatic sanctions under the sweeping legislation.

However, Washington is in a hard position when it comes to New Delhi, seeking to bolster ties with India to counter China´s growing assertiveness while maintaining pressure on Russian Federation. The S-400 systems' deliveries to India will begin in the next two years.

Other agreements - following a meeting between Putin and Prime Modi that began with a hug - were in railways and fertilisers and space, with Russian Federation undertaking to train astronauts for India´s first crewed space mission in 2022.

"Even if we do not take into account the security and economic consequences of bowing to USA demands, it would create a awful precedent".
