Tom Hanks transforms into Mister Rogers for upcoming biopic

From the cherry-red cardigan sweater to the bright blue sneakers to the crisp khakis, Hanks looks the spitting image of Rogers as he's depicted, perched on the entrance to a trailer.

Variety first reported in January that Hanks would play Rogers in TriStar Pictures' biographical drama, with production starting in September.

Sony Pictures has shared the first look of Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers in the upcoming untitled biopic. Heller has also said that Hanks is a ideal choice for the role, not because of a strong physical resemblance but due to their shared qualities and kindness. The film is based on the true story of the friendship between the "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" host and journalist Tom Junod. In 1998, he begrudgingly accepted an assignment to write a profile of the star, one of the most famous faces in American TV history, for Esquire.

"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" aired for 31 seasons over multiple decades until coming to an end in 2001.

'[This] movie is.... not a biopic, ' the filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly.

His life and legacy received renewed attention this year thanks to the critically-hailed documentary film by Morgan Neville, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?". 'I disliked that when it got announced it was characterized as such. It's due out in October 2019, which means we only have to wait a little more than a year now to see Hanks in all his Rogers-inspired glory.
