Tiger Woods wins first tournament in five years

His two stroke victory at East Lake was the 80th PGA Tour win of his career.

Woods, who finished with an 11-under-par aggregate 269, raised his arms in delight after the victory, with several thousand fans ringing the green roaring their appreciation.

"We're through an unknown and that was the hardest part, it was an unknown - I didn't know if I'd be able to do this again or to what level or what degree and here we are with 80 wins".

At Augusta in April Woods described himself as a "walking miracle" and says he now realizes just how lucky he is.

"After Rory tapped in I started tearing up a little bit".

The Open Championship, the major tournament Woods briefly led earlier in the final round earlier this year, echoed the sentiments of golfer Tommy Fleetwood, who deemed Woods to be "good at golf" after his opening-round 65.

"I just didn't know whether this would ever happen again. I think obviously for me this year it rewarded consistent golf".

Actually, it started on Saturday, when Woods began his third round with a barrage of birdies.

"I didn't know that Rosie [Justin Rose] had just won the FedEx [Tour Championship] Cup ahead of me", said Woods, congratulating Rose - who stood next to him - and his family.

"It's been tough. I've had a not-so-easy last couple of years", he said. I couldn't have done it without the help of all the people around me.

The American evoked memories of old with a near-faultless weekend as he finished two shots clear of compatriot Billy Horschel.

However, he steadied on the 17th and swerved a bunker disaster on the 18th to complete an emotional triumph.

"A bogey at No. 16 put me behind the eight ball".

Woods will now turn his attention to the Ryder Cup, which takes place next week in France.

"We're flying tonight with the guys, it's going to be fun", said Woods. "I think the world of golf is really proud of you right now".

England's Justin Rose lost his world number one ranking as a result of finishing tied fourth but secured the overall FedEx Cup which determines the season-long PGA Tour champion - the first Englishman to do so. Had Rose made par on 18, Woods would have been the champion.
