Luka Modric wins FIFA The Best award ends Ronaldo Messi duopoly

Luka Modric wins FIFA The Best award ends Ronaldo Messi duopoly

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah's strike in last season's Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield has won the FIFA Puskas Award for the goal of the season.

In other categories, the Best Coach award looks destined for Didier Deschamp after his World Cup victory with France, though there is also competition from Zinedine Zidane to retain his crown.

Modric scored twice and also netted in penalty shootout wins over Denmark and Russian Federation, but it was his playmaking ability that caught the eye in winning the Golden Ball for the best player at the World Cup.

Despite Thibaut Courtois winning the award for best goalkeeper earlier in the evening, David De Gea is in goal. Lennart missed a game for VVV-Venlo against PSV Eindhoven to donate stem cells to try and help a Leukaemia patient.

In doing so, the Croatian midfielder broke the 10-year duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, at the ceremony which held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Monday.

Argentina and Barcelona forward Messi was snubbed for the top-three of the Men's Award which consists of Ronaldo (Juventus and Portugal), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool and Egypt) and Luka Modric (Real Madrid and Croatia).

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the judges for a new award created to recognise the world's best young player.

The 33-year-old, joined Juventus this summer for a club record £100 million deal, after playing a crucial role in helping Real Madrid win a third straight Champions League title last season, his fifth in total, with 15 goals in the tournament.

However, Portugal's last 16 exit to Uruguay in Russian Federation and Ronaldo's failure to score in the semi-finals or final of the Champions League opened the door for Modric.

The award victor will emerge from a vigorous process which had a voting process involving fans, national team coaches and captains and journalists from across the globe.
