Tour Championship: Ways to watch FedExCup finale on Sky Sports

Golf's sanctioning body announced changes to its FedEx Cup playoffs in an effort to "further fan engagement, understanding and drama of FedEx Cup".

Also, significantly more money will be put into the points race and playoff format, with the victor to receive a $15 million bonus starting next season.

On Tuesday morning, the media and golf fans were made aware of the changes that are coming to the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup playoffs next season.

The first three playoff events gradually cut the field down to 30 for the final Tour Championship event, where only the top five in the rankings are guaranteed the overall Cup and $10 million prize with a win.

Gone will be the points reset that occurs following the BMW Championship and the guessing game that ensues with the various possibilities throughout the rounds. Victor of the tournament wins the whole deal, including a newly jacked-up $15 million prize.

"Our players and fans have invested in the FedExCup over the past 12 seasons, and with these enhancements, we are reinvesting in the FedExCup in order to raise the stakes, so to speak, for their benefit", said Monahan. And, of course, players will know exactly where they stand at all times while in play, which will ratchet up the drama, effect and volatility of the competition down the stretch.

After hearing Andy Pazder, the PGA Tour's chief tournament and competitions officer deliver a presentation on the changes, Casey said that he was receptive to the idea of the strokes-based scoring system.

The idea behind the change is to ensure that the victor of the Tour Championship also wins the overall FedEx Cup, removing the whole "ahead on points" strangeness and, theoretically, making the entire process much more understandable for the casual fan. Will Gray of the Golf Channel does a great job of illustrating how such a structure would affect this year's Tour Championship, which begins on Thursday. Tiger Woods, now 20th in the FedEx Cup standings, would start the tournament eight shots behind at 2-under par. That may happen again.

"It has been gratifying to witness the growth, popularity and importance of the FedExCup since its launch in 2007", said Davis Love III, a current Player Director on the PGA TOUR Policy Board who also served on the Board during the development and launch of the FedExCup. It was all over Bryson DeChambeau at the Dell Technologies Championship, projecting him as a top contender from the start despite being a 33-1 long shot.

DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Tony Finau and Justin Thomas will win the FedExCup loot should they triumph at East Lake, while others in the mix need a certain set of circumstances to go their way. The next group of five players are at 4 under, all the way down until the final five players in the 30-man field are at even par. The prize for winning the FedEx Cup is increasing to $15 million from $10 million.

In a harsh critique of his own performance, the former world No. 1 says he expected more from the 2018 season despite two US Tour victories and a runner up among five top-10 results and 14 top-25s.

The top player in points at the end of the regular season will receive a $2 million bonus, with payouts going down 10 places to $500,000.

"We are excited to bring major championship golf back to Congressional and to represent our country and the nation's capital as host of the 2036 Ryder Cup", said Bev Lane, the club president. From there, the top 70 will move on to the BMW Championship, with points quadrupled at the first two playoff events.

The Atlanta course became the annual stop for the Tour Championship in 2004.
