Kerala Nun Rape Accused Franco Mulakkal To be Arrested

Kottayam Superintendent of Police Hari Sankar said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is probing the case made a decision to complete the interrogation on Friday.

The protesters held a torchlight protest against the police delay in arresting the bishop even after two days of interrogation.

Police have sought a legal opinion as to whether Mulakkal, whose anticipatory bail plea is pending before the high court, can be arrested. The nun had claimed that most of the times it was unnatural sex. A notice has been issued to the bishop asking him to appear for interrogation on Thursday at 11 in the morning.

Senior district police official Hari Sankar told reporters that the bishop would be questioned for a third straight day on Friday.

He said, "I have photographs and videos of the nun with Mulakkal clicked on day after the alleged incident".

George, an Independent legislator, made the allegation saying that he is in possession of a photograph of the nun and the Bishop where the former can be seen in a happy and pleasant state. When the church failed to take action on this matter, the nun approached the Kerala police.

Mulakkal, who is the bishop of the northern Indian city of Jalandhar, has denied the accusations.

Protests in the form of demonstrations and indefinite fasts, demanding arrest of the accused cardinal, have been gaining momentum in different parts of Kerala. "The police don't have any evidence", said front president George Soni. Earlier, a case was registered against the Missionaries of Jesus for circulating the photograph of the rape victim.

The bishop's lawyer was not immediately reachable. Reportedly, Catholic reformation organizations also joined the protest which had been called by the Joint Christian Council.

On the other hand, Mulakkal's supporters staged a protest on the premises of Bishop house.

Her letter, leaked to Indian media, said Mulakkal was "using political and money power to bury the case". "They are forcing people to hit the streets to press for justice".

She wrote: "We experience neglect from every side. We can not crucify an innocent soul based on such allegations", reported News18. "In Punjab, a Punjabi Father must be appointed as the bishop", he said.

What does the police have to say?

The bishop has been charged under four counts including rape, illegal confinement and criminal intimidation.
