Jose Mourinho hailed the spirit of his Manchester United team after they withstood an intense late push from early English Premier League pacesetters Watford to win 2-1 on Saturday and relieve the pressure on his shoulders.

He had been expected to sign a new deal to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford, but there are strong suggestions that De Gea is demanding to become the highest-paid player at the club, alongside Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba.

"The only thing that is clear for me is that the player never, never in all these days we are together, told me he wants to leave".

"I feel real love for this club, the fans. So I'm really happy for Marouane".

"Normally I never listen to the people who speak about me", De Gea said.

'Normally, I focus on my job and trying to help my team and trying to improve every training session and try to be as a good as I can. "They play on an artificial pitch, which is a big advantage for them and a big disadvantage for the other teams".

Nemanja Matic admitted to being "surprised" after the game at Watford that Smalling did not go to the World Cup after playing almost 50 games for United last season but the centre-back insists his focus now is only on his club career.

Where do you think Man United will finish this season?

However, De Gea brushed off the criticism as he prepared to face Young Boys Bern in United's opening Champions League group game in Switzerland on Wednesday night.

He added: "Yes, of course, we want to improve in the Champions League". "He has a favourite surface but he has to win on the surfaces he is not in love with".

"We knew that Watford had confidence and we knew that if we didn't get the third goal the last 10 minutes would be how it played out but we all dug in and knew we needed to win".

Mourinho confirmed that Marcus Rashford, serving a three-match domestic ban, would start, while Diogo Dalot, a summer signing from Porto, could also be in the lineup.

"We will be travelling over a little earlier to make sure we train on that pitch so we can get used to it, but on the back of two away wins [against Burnley and Watford] I think we can build that momentum at a crucial time of the month where there are so many games".
