Grassley Fires Back at Requests From Ford's Lawyers

Lawyers for California college professor Christine Blasey Ford said Tuesday she wants the FBI to investigate her claims before she appears at a Senate hearing.

"I'd really want to see her".

However, the professor has demanded a Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into her allegations before she testifies, changing her earlier offer to testify.

But, Collins repeatedly asserted, she believed the appropriate forum to hear about Blasey Ford's allegations would be in an open hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, or, if Blasey Ford preferred, in a closed hearing or bipartisan committee staffer interview. "We'll have to make a decision".

"But I can only say this: he's such an outstanding man - very hard for me to imagine that anything happened", Trump said. "And he wanted to be Attorney General, and I didn't see it", he said.

Christine Blasey Ford's attorney told CNN her client has been "deflecting death threats and harassment".

Senators, he said, will have to determine if Ford's account of the event meets the threshold to declare Kavanaugh unfit to serve on the Supreme Court.

Democrats are hoping to wrest control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans on 6 November, dealing a serious blow to the president's agenda.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday that Ford hadn't yet confirmed that she'll testify in a public hearing set for Monday.

Republican panel member Lindsey Graham said on Twitter requiring an FBI investigation of a 36-year-old allegation "is not about finding the truth, but delaying the process till after the midterm elections". "More to the point, I never saw Brett act in the manner Dr. Ford describes".

"I don't think Federal Bureau of Investigation really should be involved because they don't want to be involved".

He said that "if she does not show up it would be unfortunate".

Kennedy added that the allowance of a hearing for Ford and the judiciary committee's willingness to come to her is "pretty unusual". Many of us heard a buzz about it indirectly with few specific details", Cristina Miranda King-who says Ford was "a year or so behind her"-claimed in Facebook post that she deleted after being overwhelmed with media inquiries".

Ford has alleged that Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed and tried taking off her clothes during a high school party in Maryland in the 1980s.

As Christine Blasey Ford's lawyers insist the FBI investigate her allegation of sexual and physical assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, here is a look back at how the FBI's investigation into Anita Hill's sexual harassment allegations against Justice Clarence Thomas came about. Some could even call a presidential order for the FBI to investigate a state-law matter to be an abuse of power.

In the Senate, the issue of whether, when and if Ford might testify has ignited a furor, especially among Democratic women.

September 20, 1991: After Hill spoke with the committee about her allegations "an FBI investigation was suggested" to her, according to comments she made at a news conference early the next month, published in the Times.

Democrats complain that Ford was not consulted before the hearing was announced.

"You've got to put this in to context", he said. "They've already postponed a major hearing". However, he also said that he reached out to Ford "three or four times" and had not received a response.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has called on both Judge Kavanaugh and Prof Ford to testify - either publicly or in a closed-door session - next Monday.
