Trump says no Federal Bureau of Investigation probe needed on Supreme Court pick

But the spectacle surrounding the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court is a classic case study of how a judicial body that considers itself a cloistered debating society can not escape the political winds that blow outside the building that features, just to the left of the entrance of the marble structure, a statue titled Contemplation of Justice.

"It kind of raises the question, do they want to come to the public hearing or not?"

Democrats are demanding that the FBI be given time to reopen its background investigation into Kavanaugh so it can check the assertions of Christine Blasey Ford, the woman accusing Kavanaugh of assault. But Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) said that the vote should not be held until senators hear more about the allegations. Dianne Feinstein received a letter in July from Christine Blasey Ford alleging the assault, but word of it only leaked Friday.

Moderate senators from both parties had argued that Judge Kavanaugh and Prof Ford should be given the chance to testify before the panel. And I just want to say to the men in this country, just shut up and step up.

The Senate Judiciary Committee was scheduled to vote on Kavanaugh this Thursday. "I mean, she's shown some very incredible courage even coming in here and we're dealing with a nominee whose veracity is already an issue".

"I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation", he said in a statement distributed by the White House.

Chuck Grassley, said he wants to set up phone calls with Kavanaugh and Ford, but did not say he would postpone the vote.

Her allegation has now put in doubt the timing of a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, and perhaps the nomination itself.

With Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation still in the balance, Republicans on the hill and in Trump's White House are scurrying to try to discredit Ford's story the best they can.

Kavanaugh, accuser say they're ready to testify - but how?
Ford told the Post that she recalled being at a party with Kavanaugh in the summer of 1982, when she was 15 and Kavanaugh was 17. Trump and Kavanaugh were not scheduled to meet while the judge was at the White House on Monday , two officials said.

That the president's senior counselor, Kellyanne Conway, swiftly advocated listening to the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault points to the power of the #MeToo movement - and of women in politics.

"There is no discussion of a Plan B" should Kavanaugh's nomination fail, according to an individual familiar with the nomination process but not authorized to speak publicly. Democrats refused to participate, saying the seriousness of the charges merited a full FBI investigation.

"She is a person of integrity", Leahy said of Feinstein.

The committee's chairman, Iowa Sen. Ford is saying that these were note taking mistakes on the part of her therapist. This isn't about what happened in the 1980s when Kavanaugh and Ford were in high school. And I hope the Senate is smarter than this and they're not going to let this stop the process from moving forward and confirming this man.

If the judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6, when congressional control will be at stake.

Anita Hill - whose sex-harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas almost derailed his appointment to the US Supreme Court in 1991 - took a swipe at the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as it grappled with accusations against a new nominee.

In the interview with Seven Days, Leahy said he learned of Blasey Ford's allegations last week, when he was pulled of the floor of the Senate during a debate over a trio of appropriations bills. He then compared the hearing, which would allow Blasey Ford to tell her story to the entire nation, to something out of Russian Federation.

Kavanaugh was seen Monday morning arriving at the White House, which has stood by the judge in the face of the accusations.
