Cleveland Browns trade wide receiver Josh Gordon to New England Patriots

With the trade official, New England released a wide receiver to make room for Gordon.

The Browns announced their intentions to release Gordon after landing in New Orleans for Sunday's game against the Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

While Gordon reportedly has the most personal interest in the Cowboys and 49ers, New England is a suitable destination for any receiver looking to better his career by being a target for ageless wonder Tom Brady.

Gordon spent most of training camp away from the team while tending to personal matters.

The Browns have been supportive of Gordon, but the team felt betrayed and decided it was time to cut ties.

Gordon has played in just six games since, missing two entire seasons because of substance abuse issues.

Gordon caught a game-tying 17-yard touchdown pass in the Browns' Week 1 tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers, his lone catch of the game.

A second-round pick of the Browns in the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft, Gordon turned 180 catches into 3,106 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Gordon's tantalizing talent had caused the Browns to hang onto him while he dealt with drug and alcohol dependence dating his teens. Gordon earned Pro Bowl honors in 2013 and was named first-team All-Pro after finishing with 87 receptions and an NFL-leading 1,646 yards with nine touchdowns.

Curious who the Browns have taken in the last three years in the fifth round? Coleman has played in 19 National Football League games with 18 starts and has 56 receptions for 718 yards and five touchdowns. The Patriots gave up a conditional 5th rounder for Gordon, according to Schefter.
