FEMA's Brock Long mistakes Hurricane Florence for Hurricane Floyd in briefing

Brock Long, is subject to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general investigation regarding his use of government vehicles, Politico reports.

According to Politico, Long is being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General over whether he used official government vehicles and personnel, and by extension, taxpayer funds, to make personal six-hour drives on the weekends from Washington, D.C., to his home in Hickory, North Carolina. Aides that went with him were put up in hotels at taxpayers' expense, one official told Politico. One source told Politico that Nielsen suggested Long, who was traveling home too frequently for the secretary's liking, resign over the issue.

While DHS employees must typically be authorized to use government vehicles for personal use, like what Long has done, there are special exceptions for the FEMA administrator.

"I would never intentionally run a program incorrectly", he continued. "Bottom line is, if we made a mistake on how a program is run, we'll work with the OIG to get those corrected".

Long, speaking at a Thursday morning briefing about Hurricane Florence's impending arrival in the Carolinas, had another system on his mind: 1999's Hurricane Floyd.

From a credibility point of view, the British government must stick to that position, McCauley asserted. At one point their interviewer turned on an air conditioning unit because she noted they were sweating.

In a statement, FEMA Director of External Affairs Jessica Nalepa referred any questions about the reported investigation to the DHS inspector general's office, and said the disaster agency cooperated with all such investigations. "Doing something unethical is not part of my DNA and it is not part of my track record in my whole entire career".

"At this time, we are fully focused on preparing for, responding to, and recovering from Hurricane Florence and the storms in the Pacific".

Since he took control of FEMA previous year, Long has allegedly been using a government driver to take him home. FEMA fully cooperates with all investigations conducted by the DHS OIG. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill on Friday.

"Having worked directly with him for over a year, I know Administrator Long to be an experienced and respected emergency manager".

Politico said Long began using a staff driver for his trips home from Washington when his term began past year, and that aides also traveled with him at taxpayer expense.
