Crime Stats: Western Cape police stations have highest murder rate

The statistics included details that there were 62 "farm murders" in the past year - a racially sensitive issue in South Africa, where some white farmers say they face a wave of deadly attacks trying to force them off their land.

Police records show that murder rates have increased in the past six consecutive years.

The North West province recorded the second-highest number of attacks‚ resulting in nine deaths.

"The figures that always scare me are murder figures", Cele continued.

Glencoe was little safer with five murders, two down from previous year, and 12 stocktheft cases.

Murders of women spiked by 11% with 2930 murders reported in 2017-2018 compared with 2639 in the previous period.

The stats also revealed that more boys than girls are being murdered in the country.

"The top 30 stations in terms of murder include the Western Cape with 10 stations followed by Gauteng with 9, then KwaZulu-Natal with 6 and the Eastern Cape with 5". Robbery with aggravating circumstances also decreased by 1.8%.

US President Donald Trump last month ignited a firestorm of debate when he claimed on Twitter that there was a "large-scale killing of farmers" in South Africa - where the government fiercely rejected his accusations.
