Senate Hopeful Rick Scott Breaks With Trump Over Puerto Rico Deaths

Then came Maria and devastation in Puerto Rico, where a slow federal response was complicated by logistical concerns and preexisting economic and infrastructure deficiencies on the island territory. "The loss of any life is tragic". "I'll continue to help PR".

DeSantis "doesn't believe any loss of life has been inflated", his campaign said in a statement. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, an Illinois Democrat who spent part of his youth in Puerto Rico, spoke on the House floor in front of a printout of the Puerto Rican flag, saying Trump is "delusional" and incapable of "empathy or basic human decency". Salon notes that nobody corrected him by pointing out that Puerto Rico is a territory of the US. In addition to his trips to the island, Scott has held roundtables with Puerto Rican leaders in Central Florida to help them find housing and jobs in the state after fleeing the storm. That number comes from the National Hurricane Center report issued less than four months after landfall in December of 2005.

Scott has invested heavily in outreach to the normally Democratic-leaning Puerto Rican community.

"Look, there was probably nothing we could do to save every life on the island".

Trump on Thursday rejected the official death toll in Puerto Rico from the September 2017 storm, tweeting "3000 people did not die". The government of Puerto Rico accepted these numbers, too, after many months in which the official death toll was listed at 64 people.

At the end of August, the island government raised the official death toll to approximately 2,975 after maintaining for almost a year that 64 people had died as a result of the storm.

Hostin blamed the Jones Act, saying it allowed the US government to "pillage and rape" the island since its inception in 1920, before asking why Trump didn't have an equal reaction to Maria as President Obama did to Haiti, which isn't even a USA territory.

President Trump on Tuesday spoke in Shanksville , Pennsylvania to commemorate the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Trump observed the anniversary for the first time as president past year , along with the first lady, at the White House.

Trump tweeted Thursday morning about how the death toll had been exaggerated.

In a second tweet Thursday, Trump cast blame on Democrats, who he said are trying to make him look bad.

Ottmar Chavez, head of the General Services Administration (GSA) in Puerto Rico, said he only became aware of the water bottles on Tuesday. Full power was restored in Puerto Rico following last year's storm only last month.

Fact checking Trump's tweet, CNN also found it has no basis in fact.

"That's comparing him to Hitler, someone who gasses his own people that starve their people, the orders for thousands of their own people to die", Huntsman responses.

"There are Puerto Ricans who moved to Florida, who could make or break statewide elections in Florida in 2018 and I hope all those Puerto Ricans and all those people who know Puerto Ricans in Florida or who like Puerto Ricans, who are mad as hell at this tweet remember that the deadline to register to Florida if you moved is October 9th".
