Trump Administration Will Declare 'Superfluous' International Criminal Court at The Hague 'Illegitimate'

Fearing the announcement of a formal investigation, Bolton warned that the US will not "sit quietly" if the court comes after citizens of the United States or Israel, which is facing a possible investigation for alleged crimes in Palestinian territories. Erekat said the Palestinians will continue to push for that, which Nauert also cited as a reason for the US decision to shut down the office.

But Bolton spent the bulk of his speech on Monday criticizing the International Criminal Court, which he said is too harsh on Israel. He also indicated the Palestinians plan to join other global bodies.

The International Criminal Court was created to adjudicate international war crimes and acts of terrorism. Their leadership has already roundly rejected those moves, saying the USA has lost its role as a peacemaker because of it.

Speaking at a Federalist Society event at the Mayflower Hotel this morning, Bolton slammed the Hague-based ICC as an effort by "self-styled "global governance" advocates" to override national sovereignty through its investigations of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

The U.S. "will always stand with our friend and ally, Israel", Bolton plans to say in his prepared remarks, the Journal reported, citing a draft it had reviewed.

Mr Bolton, who has been particularly vocal in his opposition to the court, attacked two areas of its work in a speech on Monday.

"We have been notified by a U.S. official of their decision to close the Palestinian mission to the U.S.", Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) secretary-general Saeb Erekat said in a statement. "We will do the same for any company or state that assists an ICC investigation of Americans", Mr Bolton said. She criticized the PLO for condemning a USA peace plan "they have not yet seen".

Last month, the White House said it would redirect $200million earmarked to support Palestinian economic support forums to other areas.

Just last month, it canceled more than $200 million in aid for projects in the West Bank and Gaza as well as the remainder of its planned assistance for the United Nations agency that helps Palestinian refugees around the Middle East. Over the weekend, it announced it would cut $25 million in assistance for hospitals in east Jerusalem that provide critical care to Palestinian patients.

Team Trump's consistent disdain for the "soft power" of multilateral institutions and diplomacy, which has been a bulwark of USA foreign policy since World War II, is going to undermine this country for years after Trump and Bolton leave Washington. If the Palestinians want to be treated with the respect of a peace partner, they have to first show a desire for peace.

The dossier "included a focus on the war crimes facing Khan al-Ahmar, specifically the crimes of forcible displacement, ethnic cleansing and the destruction of civilian property", Erekat said. European countries urged Israel this week to refrain from demolition.

Israel says the village was illegally built and has offered to resettle its residents 7 miles away, while critics say its removal is meant to make room for an Israeli settlement.

Israel's Supreme Court last week rejected petitions against the demolition the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar.

Palestinian activists put up several trailers early Tuesday in protest.

"There's nothing we have in our back pocket that says, 'Well, Israel, you've got to give up X, Y and Z because the embassy was moved, '" he told the newspaper.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) opened a PLO mission in Washington in 1994, after signing the Oslo I Accord peace agreement with Israel in 1993. Although the US does not recognize Palestinian statehood, the PLO has maintained in Washington a general delegation office that facilitates Palestinian officials' interactions with the USA government.
