BJP Only Bothered About Industrialists, Instead Of Fuel Prices: Congress

Reacting to the BJP's barb that the Congress believed in "Breaking India" while the BJP believed in "Make in India" the Congress asked the BJP if that was the case, why did the Modi government cancel the order to manufacture 108 Rafale fighter jets by the public sector undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

In Delhi, petrol costs Rs 80.73 and diesel Rs 72.83. Since mid-August, petrol price has risen by Rs 3.24 a litre and diesel by Rs 3.74 per litre as rupee hit record low against the United States dollar, making imports costlier.

However, many feel that by attributing the price hike only on global factors must be taken with a pinch of salt, the BJP government is trying to shrug away its own responsibility of bringing fuel prices under the ambit of the Goods and the Services Tax (GST).

In the 13 days between August 29 and September 10, petrol and diesel prices have risen daily; in the case of petrol from Rs 81.45 to 84.06, and in the case of diesel from Rs 74.74 to Rs 77.98.

Serena Williams' U.S
Tennis legend Billie Jean King agreed with Williams in a series of tweets, calling out a "double standard". Williams was hit with a first violation for Mouratoglou coaching her with a hand signal in the second set.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday said that India as a stable economy should avoid any knee-jerk reaction to volatile crude oil prices, indicating no cut in taxes on fuel despite petrol and diesel prices breaching record levels in the national capital.

Prices of petrol and diesel continued to rise today even as the Congress observes a Bharat Bandh from 9 am to 3 pm over rising fuel prices. "If taxes are cut, prices will decline significantly".

Amid the Opposition-sponsored nation-wide shutdown, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released a couple of graphics describing the percentage hike in both petrol and diesel prices. "Bringing oil in GST is not a solution".

Meanwhile, transporters are gearing up to put pressure on the government to reverse its fuel tax policy. It is clear that the prime reason why petrol and diesel are expensive is because of the central and state taxes. "Till then dependence on oil will continue", he said. This led to its excise collections from petro goods more than doubling in the last four years - from Rs 99,184 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2,29,019 crore in 2017-18. The new rates will come into effect from Tuesday. Nearly half of the retail selling price of the two fuels is made up of Central and State taxes. In a span of one week, prices of petrol and diesel have gone up by Rs 1.65 a litre and Rs 1.92 a litre, respectively.
