It also comes at a time of tension between the president and his top law enforcement officer. "In his world they swore an oath to him, not (the) constitution and laws", Schatz wrote on Twitter.

Sessions, the first US senator to endorse Trump during the 2016 race, provoked his boss's ire when he announcedlast year that he would recuse himself from any federal probe into Russian election meddling.

Due to his recusal, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is overseeing the special counsel investigation.
