Trendy coconut oil called poison

Coconut oil increases low-density lipoprotein cholesterol - commonly known as "bad" cholesterol - because it's associated with increased risk of heart disease.

Michels, who serves as chair of Harvard's Department of Epidemiology, called the product "pure poison" as she explained that its saturated fat content is a serious threat to cardiovascular health.

In her words, any product that contains coconut oil, awful for the cardiovascular system because it contains huge amount of cholesterol carried by low density lipoproteins (LDL).

Coconut oil also has a higher proportion of MCTs than most other fats or oils; however, there is a catch to the research.

The AHA says those are false: it's not been proven, and coconut oil is worse with 82 percent saturated fat than butter at 63 percent. It can be used in moderation, according to Doctor Walter C. Willett, of Harvard's Department of Nutrition.

The invasion of coconut oil began in the early 2000s after two research scientists at Columbia University have shown the benefits of medium chain fatty acids found in coconuts. "HDL is called the "good cholesterol" because it helps to keep cholesterol from building up in the arteries, while LDL is called the "bad cholesterol" because it's the main source of cholesterol build-up and blockage in the arteries, which can lead to heart attack and stroke". She based her statement on the high proportion of saturated fat in coconut oil that can have a damaging effect on your body. The organization reveals that reducing saturated fat intake and replacing it with unsaturated fat lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.

As CNN points out, many people think coconut oil is a healthy alternative.

What to look for when purchasing coconut oil and how much to consume?

Coconut oil has been heralded as a healthy alternative and a poison but, which is true? "However, it is best to restrict yourself to small amounts and use unsaturated oils as an everyday choice instead".
