Metro Vancouver Air Quality Moves To Highest Risk, Levels Worse Than Delhi

The service says air quality in Western Washington is expected to worsen starting Sunday.

An air quality alert is also in place across Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

Smoke from the more than 540 active wildfires continues to impact highway and air travel.

Metro Vancouver announced Sunday it would continue a previous air quality advisory because of the high levels of fine particulate matter, which doctors say can be absorbed into the blood stream and lungs, causing exhaustion and confusion.

People with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, infants, children and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.

An air pollution advisory for southern OR remains in effect until further notice.

Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy around the region on Sunday and officials with the district warned that if the smell of smoke is present, Bay Area residents should stay inside if possible.

"From one corner of the province to the other, we've got major fires of note burning right now", Kevin Skrepnek of the BC Wildfire Service told CTV Vancouver.

The Shovel Lake fire is considered to be one of the highest priorities for firefighters. The fire was discovered July 27 and has since grown to almost 85,000 hectares, or slightly larger than the City of Calgary.

A cold front has shifted wind direction and smoke from the British Columbia wildfires is now shifting stateside.
