Idris Elba fuels speculation that he’s the next James Bond

Elba's name has now been linked to the Bond franchise for nearly a decade, during which time Daniel Craig has starred in three films in the series.

Just days after famed James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli suggested it was time to bring more diversity to the iconic spy's lineage, actor Idris Elba is teasing fans with a playful tweet that has many wishing it were true.

"My name's Elba, Idris Elba", he tweeted.

Elba remained quiet about the rumors, but did take to his Twitter today and tweet "Don't believe the HYPE".

The latest round of speculation appears to have begun with a report in the Daily Star last week.

" While this seems like the 45-year-old star's way of putting the idea of him playing Bond to bed, it's hard to tell for sure".

Of course, Fuqua's agent later said the quote was fiction.

Fuqua's representative released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter stating that that conversation with Broccoli never took place.

Craig, 50, has stared as James Bond since he took over from Pierce Brosnan in 2005.

Back in 2016, Elba called speculation that he'll be the first black Bond the "wildest rumor in the world" and wondered if he was too old for the role.

Craig will return for the fifth time as Bond in 2019, in an as yet unnamed movie directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle.

A number of online betting agencies are running odds on who will be next in line, with Elba the frontrunner.
