Pence in his speech asked Congress to approve $8bn over five years for space security systems, but a freestanding Space Force would likely cost far more than that.

Trump said in the East Room of the White House: "My administration is reclaiming America's heritage as the world's greatest spacefaring nation".

These new organizations are part of a broad move to restructure the way the USA military manages its space operations and technologies. The third unit is the Space Operations Force, made up of leaders and fighters for their expertise.

Pence's Pentagon trip coincides with the release of a Department of Defense report to Congress on recommendations for the Space Force.

"As soon as I heard President Trump was bringing the Space Force back, I re-enlisted", Willard said.

The Space Force would be responsible for a range of crucial space-based USA military capabilities, which include everything from satellites enabling the Global Positioning System (GPS) to sensors that help track missile launches.

In concurrence with Pence's speech, the Pentagon laid out its plans to form the new branch of the United States military in a 15-page report, identifying immediate steps of action.

Thursday's announcement coincided with a report detailed by the Pentagon on how the newest branch of the United States military is set to work.

And, for what it's worth, Russian and China do each have a space force of their own, to some degree.

Critics remain sceptical of the proposal, questioning the requirement of such an expensive department.

The former official said the creation of a separate Space Force will create more red tape, not less.

In his most pointed commentary, Colbert played a doctored clip of President John F. Kennedy saying, "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but to distract from Robert Mueller".
