A series of earthquakes shook that Southeast Asian nation and some regions of Lombok, an island approximately 4,700 square kilometers, entire towns and villages were reduced to rubble.

A week earlier, on July 29, another magnitude-6.4 natural disaster hit Lombok and left 16 people dead, 355 injured and 1,500 buildings destroyed.

He estimated 75 per cent of houses are damaged in some villages in east and north Lombok.

But Thursday's quake destroyed his house, which completely collapsed, he said.

He said his agency is "still verifying the correctness of the data".

U.S. quake monitors said the latest aftershock had a magnitude of 5.9.

Sunday's quake also sent some 2,500 people to hospital with serious injuries and drove more than 156,000 people from their homes.

Thursday's aftershock, rated at 6.2 by local authorities and 5.9 by the U.S. Geological Survey, buried four people in northern Lombok, Sutopo said.

Local authorities, global relief groups and the central government have begun organising aid, but shattered roads have slowed efforts to reach survivors in the mountainous north of Lombok, which bore the brunt of the quake.

Wiranto, who goes by one name, said the government will develop a plan to rebuild communities on Lombok, which like its more famous neighbor Bali is a popular tourist destination with powder white beaches, mountains and a lush interior.

A humanitarian crisis looms in Lombok, which was rocked by another deadly quake last month, with thousands of victims of Sunday's disaster in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter, aid agencies said.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the country's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told the news agency Wednesday that another 1,447 people were injured and more than 165,000 have been displaced.

Until Tuesday (8/8), aftershocks still occurred after the quake with a magnitude of 7 hit Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday (5/8).

"In some villages we visited the destruction was nearly 100 percent, all houses collapsed, roads are cracked and bridges were broken", said Arifin Muhammad Hadi, a spokesman for the Indonesian Red Cross.

Thousands of tourists have been evacuated from Lombok and the Gili Islands.

He said they had later found and treated 40 people with broken bones, cuts and bruises.

Rescuers have located victims beneath flattened buildings, with one woman pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed mosque, which fell as people were praying.
